James Dixon is very happy with the bit of luck in the Lotto Max draw on May 19.
"I'm happy winning the $5,000," he said. "For an $18 investment, you get almost $5,200. That's pretty good."
To win that much money, Dixon had to get six out of seven numbers in the Lotto Max draw.
That means he was just one number away from at least a share of a multi-million-dollar jackpot, and perhaps the whole jackpot. For the May 19 draw of Lotto Max, the jackpot was $37.3 million.
Dixon also came close to winning a big jackpot 28 years ago.
In 1989, he just missed winning a Lotto 6-49 draw for $20 million.
"We had five out of six numbers," he recalled. "The last number was 44. We had 43."
In that draw, he won $2,006.90 on a ticket he bought with his wife, Carol Dixon.
The couple usually play lotteries when the jackpots get high.
As for his recent win, Dixon noted he will pay some bills and put some of the money towards a new house he and his wife are hoping to build.
The 60-year-old Dixon is still hopeful he may one day hit a jackpot.
"Maybe the third time's a charm," he said, although he added it might take another 20 years.
