At least two vehicles were seen out front of the MacKay Building on 51 Avenue near 50 Street after someone who was walking by saw what appeared to be a grenade and reported the explosive device to police. The supposed grenade was on a window ledge on the outside of the building.

RCMP Const. Elenore Sturko said when police arrived, however, they quickly determined the grenade was in fact a toy.

"We don't know why it was placed on a window ledge outside the building," she said.

"We don't know if it was put there as a practical joke or whether a child had left it there."

Sturko said she was unable to divulge whether there are bomb disposal experts among their officers in Yellowknife.
