IQALUIT - Councillor Jim Little has been appointed chair of Iqaluit's newly-formed public safety committee.

The motion was put forward in Little's absence by deputy mayor Allen Hayward at the city council meeting Jan. 13.

"I have it on good authority he is interested," he told council.

In October, Little helped facilitate a town meeting on public safety after hearing concerns from citizens that not enough was being done to address crime and its effects. He came before council a month later, proposing that a community safety committee be established to develop a draft community safety plan.

Budget extension

Iqaluit city council has approved a motion to request an extension from the Government of Nunavut on its budget process for the upcoming fiscal year.

"We need an extension from the GN to delay budget proceedings," said Hayward. "It is in the best interests of the city and the GN."

He added the extension would give the city much-needed time to get budget figures and details in order.

Texas Hold'em

Council received a letter announcing the lottery regulations in Nunavut will allow charitable organizations to hold Texas Hold'em poker tournaments in communities across the territory.

To do so, organizations must be registered as a non-profit society for at least six months and in good standing in terms of filing the requirements of the Societies Act. Application forms for lottery licences can be obtained through the consumer affairs office of Community and Government Services in Baker Lake.
