BROUGHTON ISLAND - Quick-thinking fire fighters in Qikiqtarjuaq saved the hamlet's fire truck when a blaze broke out in the hall last week, according to SAO Mike Richards.
Resident Simeone Natsiapik alerted hamlet bylaw officers Jamie Kooneeliusie and
Jimmy Auliaqaq to the problem at 9:20 p.m. on Oct.5.
The community's fire department began arriving on the scene within 20 minutes.
As flames started burning near the rear tires of the truck, deputy fire chief Elijah Kopalie drove the truck out of the smoke to save it.
Fire officer Billy Mikeolak used hand extinguishers to control the burning until the chief and more members showed up to control the fire and save the building.
"In five minutes the whole truck and building would have been gone," wrote Richards in an email the next day.
The cause of the fire could not be confirmed as of press time.
