Yellowknife (June 02/04) - Yellowknifers with overdue material or late fees at the Yellowknife Public Library can stop hiding from library staff.

The Food for Fines program will let book bandits pay their fees with non-perishable food donations to the Yellowknife Food Bank.

The late fee on any library material returned June 5 to 12 will be waived for one item of non-perishable food. Food can also be used to pay outstanding late fees. The library hopes to recover some books with the program, but their biggest concern is not for the missing material.

"Along with those missing items go missing patrons," said Deborah Bruser, library manager. "When people are alienated (by late fees) they don't tend to want to use the facility," Bruser said.

The library always accepts donations of books and other useful material. In 2003 they received 350 donations.
