Inmates sent to Edmonton
The hunger strike is over

NNSL (Apr 30/97) - Two Yellowknife Correctional Centre inmates who were on a hunger strike last week will serve their time in an Edmonton penitentiary.
Michael and Hank Lafferty were flown to Edmonton Friday morning, said Darlene Lafferty, wife of Michael -- the YCC prisoner who was admitted to Stanton Regional Hospital last Thursday.
Darlene Lafferty said the two brothers were removed from YCC after their fellow inmates signed a petition saying the pair were dangerous to the other prisoners.
They also called off their strike, which they had mounted to protest alleged violations of their human rights.
"Michael called at five in the morning to say he was going to Edmonton," she said. "And his mother phoned and said he is doing all right."
She said she would have liked to have seen her husband before he went down south.
"I don't think he's coming back -- his release date is in July," she said.
Corrections officials could not be reached for comment.
